ROBOTIC TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY – MAKO
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure during which a pathological or damaged joint is replaced by an artificial joint called an implant. Made of high-quality metal alloys and plastic materials (to optimally mimic the function of bone and cartilage respectively), the implant is designed to move almost like a healthy human joint.
Over the years, arthroplasty surgical techniques and tools have evolved greatly. By “robotic-assisted technology” it is important to understand that we do not mean that the surgery is performed by the Mako robotic arm. The surgery is performed by an orthopedic surgeon who uses the Mako system software to pre-plan your procedure. The orthopedic surgeon will guide the Mako robotic arm to remove the abnormal bone and cartilage. The surgeon will then place an implant. Mako technology was designed to help surgeons provide their patients with a personalized surgery based on their individual diagnosis and anatomy.
Which patients can have robotic knee replacement?
If you are a candidate for traditional knee replacement, you may also be a candidate for robotic-assisted knee replacement. It’s important to talk to your doctor to see if surgery—or other nonsurgical options for treating knee pain—is best for you. Robotic knee replacements are ideal for even the most complex knee joint disease. This includes patients who have:
- Deformities in the femur after injury
- Complex degeneration
- Material from previous surgeries
What are the advantages of robotic knee replacement surgery?
There are many advantages to robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery compared to traditional surgery. Advantages include:
- Improved surgical planning. Depending on the robotic option that is right for you, specialized 3D images are taken in preparation or during surgery. These images help your surgeon more accurately plan the optimal type and placement of the replacement joint to ensure the correct size and fit.
- Greater accuracy. Robotic technologies enhance your orthopedic surgeon’s expertise for more precise planning, tissue removal and implant placement. This can result in faster recovery times, fewer complications, and a lower chance of repeat surgery.
Differences between traditional and Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery
Robotic assistance acts as a guide, helping your surgeon follow the plan he has planned in advance. As with traditional surgery, your orthopedic surgeon is in control, however, using the robot as an additional surgical tool.
The robot enhances your surgeon’s skills at all stages of your surgery to help you achieve the best possible results. Robotic joint replacement uses more precise incisions and helps achieve optimal positioning, which can lead to better and faster recovery.
